Senior Capstone- Tunnel Mental Health Center
Research Journal: Fall 2020 - 4 Months
Facility Design: Spring 2021 - 5 Months
For my senior capstone project, I was given the opportunity to select a topic of my choice and design a building catering to my chosen topic. I chose to design a mental and behavioral health facility for adolescents and young adults aged 18-25, focusing on anxiety, depression, and post-traumatic stress disorders. I spent my fall 2020 semester conducting extensive research on mental illnesses, healthcare design, and my chosen site located in Cleveland, Ohio. My research journal can be viewed below.
Throughout my spring 2021 semester, I took the findings from my previous semester’s research and worked to design an inclusive and inviting facility to treat such common illnesses in today’s society. Some of the key takeaways that I found through my research and used to drive my design included:
The healing benefits of patients accessibility to natural elements such as greenery and natural lighting
The importance of creating spatial flexibility, allowing patients to experience their surroundings in a way that is beneficial to their own personal healing journey
